In the second semester of the IT minor, I built upon the data skill I learned in the first semester. In that semester I learned how to create an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD), create a database, create relationships in a database, and how to write a query that would bring back the specific results. All of the skills I learned in the second semester built upon the skills I learned in the first semester. Building upon those skills helped me not only better understand how to create and work with a database, but it also improved my skills for working with Excel and Google Sheets. Below I describe my major assignments for the data section from the second semester.
First Database Assignment
Before I submitted my first database assignment I actually created an ERD and a notes database with my classmates, so I actually had a minimal amount of experience in creating a database. The database and ERD I submitted was based in part off of the database and ERD I built with my group mates, but I changed mine so it was not identical to the one I made with my group. Below are some screenshots of my first database assignment including the ERD, a look at my database and some of the queries that can be run.
Gemini V Database
Gemini V was the name of my group for the project where we simulated what the client project would be like in the capstone semester. Tom and Dan (Professor Spillers and Professor Wallace) were our clients and they were opening a pizza place on campus. As part of our broader project in creating a website, they also asked that we create a database that would create a record of the order, like their name and the type of pizza they ordered. Using the knowledge that my group members and I had obtained in that semester and the first semester we created an ERD that would provide our client with what they requested, as well as adding a section for membership, so as they grew at a later date they could incorporate a membership system. Customers used a Google Form so all of the information went into a google sheet, that could be easily imported into the database at the end of the day, and we show Tom and Dan how to do that. Below are some screenshots of the database we created, the ERD and, some of the queries that could run. If you want to read more about this project click here.
